Guess Who?

These are Travilla sketches for Marilyn Monroe, created for a film she never made. Name the film and the actress who eventually played the part intended for Marilyn.

  1. My guess is (thanks to a dual effort by my movie buff dad and my costume history knowledge) "How to be Very, Very Popular" which went on to star Sheree North.

  2. I have no idea, but the costumes remind me of Gypsy, which ended up being played by Natalie Wood. The timing on that seems off to me, though...is a puzzlement!

  3. Fabulous costumes!!!
A December 1954 item in Hollywood Reporter's "Rambling Reporter" column indicated that the studio wanted Marilyn Monroe to appear in the film "H 2 b V V P" with Jane Russell, her co-star in the studio's highly successful 1953 production _Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953_).

BTW- luv scoff69's "is a puzzlement"- quoting Inga from Young Frankenstein? LOL

  4. It's "The Stripper" and the role of Lila, which was originally intended for Marilyn, is played by Joanne
    Woodward.

  6. I think you're right about Sheree North because I saw a photo of her in a similar costume in white. Travilla did the costumes for both films, How To Be Very Very Popular in 1955 and also The Stripper in 1963. He was nominated for The Stripper. Marilyn was asked to be in HTBVVP, but turned it down, and she was supposed to be in The Stripper, but died and was replaced by Woodward.
HTBVVP also was Betty Grable's final film. Marilyn and Betty were friends. I stand corrected!
